How To Bust Assumptions

How To Bust Assumptions

Apr 19, 2023

I want to talk about assumptions today. And why you need to bust them.

As a Licensed Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ since 2011 and an ICF Accredited Coach Trainer since 2014, I've studied and researched a lot about the neuroscience, how the mind works, how we generate communication and behaviors, how our language dictates our reality and overall how we can maximize our human potential.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that, you can not not make assumptions.

Which means that your brain is wired to make assumptions. A ton of them. All the time!

All of your beliefs, all of your ideas and opinions at the core, are nothing but your assumptions.

They are only in your world and they belong only to you. Not anybody else.

That's why we call them assumptions.

And sometimes they are not really helpful.

And because of that, I have some very entertaining ideas to bust those non-helpful assumptions.

1. KNOW WHAT THEY ARE

Anything you want to do, anything you want to create, anything you want to transition into something else, it is change. Change has a formula in my world, that formula is CHANGE = AWARENESS X  WILLINGNESS. When you are aware you can do something about it, right? So you got to know what your assumptions are.

2. USE YOUR CONTEXTUAL INTELLIGENCE

It is a part of your contextual intelligence and when you formulate questions to analyze the situation. With these 6W1H questions, they become your contextual intelligence. And when you apply this contextual intelligence to your assumptions, guess what? You start busting them. And as you bust them, you become so good at it and you start busting other people's assumptions.

3. OFFER A POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE

After you bust all of those assumptions, you got to offer a positive alternative assumption. Busting might sound like a game so far the way I shared with you in this video, and it can be actually, you can even go ahead and play with your kids if you want to and yet again, once an assumption is bust. The person is like hanging in the air, like, what do I believe instead? Then what opinion do I hold onto? Right? So give them something. If you busted a negative belief, give them something positive to believe instead. Here's an example. Maybe this person has a limiting belief that they cannot make any.
