EPISODE 62
SEASON 5
Three Reasons You’re Not a Good Listener (Yet) — And How to Change That Immediately
Let’s be real.
Most people believe they are good listeners.
But if that were true, we wouldn’t have this much misunderstanding, friction, projection, and emotional disconnection in the world.
Listening is not about staying quiet.
Listening is about regulation.
Resonance.
Neurological awareness.
Let me break it down.
Reason #1: You’re a Level 1 Listener
A Level 1 listener is stuck in their own head.
The moment someone speaks, your brain scans for relevance.
It opens your internal “mental folders.”
It double-clicks on your own files.
Fear.
Success.
Failure.
Trauma.
Beliefs.
And suddenly you’re not listening anymore.
You’re processing yourself.
Your amygdala might even trigger safety mode.
You freeze.
You regulate internally.
And input from the outside stops.
You’re listening to your inner voice — not the person in front of you.
If you want to shift this, ask yourself during conversations:
Am I truly curious right now — or am I inside my own head?
That question alone can rewire your presence.
Reason #2: You Project Your Words Onto Their World
Someone says “fear.”
You hear “failure.”
Someone says “uncertain.”
You hear “incompetent.”
Those are your mental associations.
When you replace someone’s vocabulary with your interpretation, you break resonance.
And without resonance, there is no connection.
Great listeners check in.
They ask:
Do you resonate with that word?
Am I understanding you correctly?
If you don’t check — you project.
And projection creates friction.
Reason #3: You Don’t Understand Brain Mechanics
This is the biggest one.
If you don’t understand:
-
How the nervous system regulates
-
How the amygdala processes threat
-
How language patterns shape perception
-
How mental automation runs behavior
You will keep reacting unconsciously.
Most people talk about AI automation.
But the real automation?
It’s your brain.
Your patterns.
Your triggers.
Your conditioned responses.
If you cannot crack your own automation, you cannot master listening.
Great listeners are self-aware.
They study psychology.
They study neuroscience.
They study language.
Because understanding the source code of the mind changes everything.
Listening Is Leadership
When people feel heard, they feel safe.
When they feel safe, they open.
When they open, transformation begins.
That is why listening is not a soft skill.
It is a power skill.
And if you want better relationships, better coaching, better leadership, and better results — this is your invitation to rise.
Become a great listener to yourself first.
Then you will become unforgettable to others.
