Turn Your Trance Into Transformation: How Autopilot Is Costing You
(and What to Do About It)

Do you ever catch yourself moving through the day and think, That felt automatic — where did the time go?
That automatic mode is what I call a trance. It’s useful for some things, like your heartbeat and breathing.
But when trance runs your eating, your talking, and your relationships, it costs you: health, connection, clarity and the relationship you most need — the one with yourself.
Here’s how to spot the trance and turn it into transformation.
What is a trance?
A trance is a transition state. From a neuroscience perspective it’s when your brain shifts between wave patterns and your conscious awareness steps back. In practical terms it’s autopilot: you act but you are not fully present. Those hidden programs and social scripts run the show unless you intentionally bring awareness in.
Where trance shows up
• Driving while mentally elsewhere.
• Eating without noticing what, how much, and why.
• Speaking on autopilot — habitual phrases, words with no intention.
• Relationships — reactive words, old patterns that replay without examination.
Why it costs you
Autopilot creates small wounds that erode trust, health, and self-respect. Habitual communication wounds relationships. Mindless eating affects health. Saying “one day” keeps your dreams in limbo. The cost is subtle but cumulative.
Signs you’re on autopilot

How to turn trance into transformation
My formula for change is simple: Change = Awareness Ă— Willingness.
Awareness always comes first.
Notice your trance. Name it. Create a mental file so you can catch yourself next time. Then bring willingness — the action piece.

• Replace automatic phrases with intentional ones. Choose value, context, usefulness.
• Use small checks during the day: “Am I present right now?”
• Ask the life question: “Is this in alignment with my truth?” and wait for your inner answer.
• Partner with life. Treat your day as co-creation, not a series of tasks.
